Dental Crowns

Our Galesburg, MI dentist, Dr. Lorraine Hanna, along with her team at Briarwood Valley Dentistry, are proud to provide restorative dental services to patients of all ages, including crowns.

Restoring Teeth With Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over an original tooth to restore the tooth's shape, size, and strength to improve its appearance. Crowns are typically used on teeth that have been decayed, damaged, or cracked. A crown can be made from many different materials, including porcelain, acrylic resin, gold, or a combination of these materials.

The Process of Getting a Crown

When a patient visits us at our Kalamazoo office to have a dental crown placed, the treatment plan typically involves:

  • Numbing the tooth to remove any decay that is present in or around the tooth
  • Reshaping the tooth to ensure the crown fits well
  • Taking a physical or digital impression of the teeth in order to have the crown made
  • Making a temporary crown out of acrylic resin that is used while the custom crown is being made
  • Replacing the temporary crown with the permanent crown
  • Making sure the crown looks good and fits well and then cementing it into place

After Crown Placement

Once Dr. Hanna completes your dental crown placement, it is important to follow post-procedure instruction to maintain the integrity of your new crown. The crowns used today are durable and very natural looking, but some damaging habits like grinding the teeth, chewing ice, or biting on fingernails can damage a crown. By refraining from these activities, practicing good oral hygiene, and seeing your Kalamazoo general dentist regularly for checkups, your new crown can last a lifetime!
