Most Common Dental Problems

As a dental patient, you may experience minor to severe dental issues, all of which Briarwood Valley Dentistry can treat. Below, we’ve put together a list of the most common dental problems and how to identify them.

  • Tooth Decay: Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems facing kids, teens, and adults, and it is highly preventable. Foods high in sugar and carbohydrates leave deposits on your teeth that bond with the bacteria in your mouth to form plaque. When plaque is not removed, tooth decay can develop as the plaque eats away at the protective enamel on teeth. By limiting foods with high amounts of sugar and carbohydrates, you can dramatically reduce your risk for decay.

  • Tooth Sensitivity: When you have sensitive teeth, certain actions like brushing your teeth or consuming hot or cold foods and drinks can cause sharp, temporary pain in your teeth. Sensitive teeth can be caused by worn down enamel, receding gums or by chips or cracks on the surfaces of teeth.

  • Periodontal Disease: Periodontal or gum disease is a common problem in dental patients, yet highly preventable. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease that is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If it is not treated, gingivitis leads to periodontitis, which can eventually lead to tooth loss. You can avoid getting periodontal disease by doing a great job of brushing and flossing and visiting us for routine checkups and cleanings in Kalamazoo, MI.

  • Bad Breath: Halitosis or bad breath is often caused by the buildup of food particles and bacteria in the mouth. While consuming some foods like garlic and onions can cause your breath to temporarily smell bad, consistent bad breath may indicate that you have tooth decay or gum disease. Please notify us so we can be of help.

  • Canker Sores: Canker sores or aphthous ulcers are small, shallow lesions on the inside of the mouth. A canker sore has a light grayish-colored center with a red-colored border. Most often, a canker sore will disappear on its own after a week or two. If you have recurring canker sores, our Kalamazoo dentist can recommend an antimicrobial mouth rinse, a topical ointment, antiviral medications, or supplements.

  • Orthodontic Problems: An improper bite can be something you inherit or acquire. Orthodontic problems can be caused by many things like missing or crowded teeth, a misaligned jaw, a long-term thumb sucking habit, developmental issues and even accidents and injuries.
