Reasons Teeth May Need To Be Extracted

Even though it is best to save every tooth that may be damaged by an injury, accident, or dental decay, at times it is necessary to extract a tooth. There are many reasons why teeth may need extracting. It could be that a primary tooth is misshapen or has a long root that prevents it from coming out on its own. Perhaps tooth decay has destroyed much of a tooth, putting the nearby teeth and jaw at risk for infection. Sometimes a tooth or teeth must be extracted before a patient can undergo orthodontic treatment or a problematic wisdom tooth may need to be removed.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

If Dr. Hanna tells you that you need an extraction, she may ask you to schedule another visit to have the procedure done. A tooth root is embedded in the jawbone in a socket and the tooth is held in that socket with a ligament. To extract a tooth, Dr. Hanna must expand the socket and separate the tooth from the ligament which is holding the tooth in place. This procedure typically is done quite easily. However, we may provide you with sedation if requested.

Once a tooth has been extracted, the teeth around that empty space can shift into the open gap. This can lead to inefficient chewing, which in turn can lead to digestive issues and it can also negatively affect the functioning of your jaw joint. Therefore, Dr. Hanna may tell you that you’d benefit from replacing the lost tooth with a dental implant or bridge.
